Custom-cut boards
Order custom-cut boards from any Passepartout board in our range. Choose material, color, and thickness to suit your project—such as archival board as a backing, or a colored background that picks up tones from your floated work and sets it apart from the surrounding Passepartout.
Custom-cut board made to measure from matboard
For our custom-cut boards, you can choose any Passepartout board from our range. You receive the board you want in your individual outer size, without an image opening. Depending on the material, the cut is suitable as an archival backing, for presentation, or as the visible background of a floated work in the Passepartout.
Present floated works in the Passepartout
With a float presentation, the outer edges of your work remain visible. This is especially appealing with handmade paper, irregular sheet edges, or an intentionally preserved paper border. The board cut behind it becomes visible between the edge of the work and the Passepartout opening, creating a design background.
Match the size of the Passepartout opening to your work so the desired distance to its outer edges is created. With the width of this visible area and the color of the background board, you influence how clearly the work stands out from the surrounding Passepartout.
Pick up colors—or create deliberate contrast
With a colored background board, you can pick up a nuance from the motif and create a connection between the image and the framing. A different shade, by contrast, creates a visible boundary between the work and the Passepartout. Especially with light paper, a slightly darker background can highlight the outline and character of the sheet edge.
When choosing, also consider the color of the Passepartout and the frame. You’ll find inspiration on how image and board work together in our guide Choose Passepartout color.
Choose archival board as a suitable backing
For archiving and conservation framing, we offer suitable archival and museum grades. If the board comes into direct contact with your work, its material quality should be matched to the respective artwork, paper, or photographic process.
Not every Passepartout board is intended for long-term archiving. So, in addition to color and thickness, choose the right quality. Our guide Quality differences in Passepartouts helps you choose.
Define outer size and material thickness
Enter the desired width and height of the board cut. If the board is to cover the entire area behind a Passepartout, its size usually matches the Passepartout’s outer dimensions. For framing, the frame’s sheet size is what matters. Further notes can be found under Measuring picture frames correctly.
Also pay attention to material thickness: background board, artwork, Passepartout, glazing, and, if applicable, an additional backing board must all fit together in the frame. Available thicknesses and maximum cut sizes depend on the board selected.
