As various picture frame dimensions play a role, uncertainty often arises when selecting the right frame. The following explains the most common picture frame dimensions and their significance. You will also learn which measurement is critical when ordering a picture frame and what to consider to ensure the picture and frame fit together perfectly.

The various picture frame dimensions at a glance

The sheet size – The most important of all picture frame dimensions when ordering a picture frame

The sheet size refers to the size of the content that can be placed in the picture frame. It thus corresponds to the glass size, the outer Passepartout dimension, and the back panel dimension. If you wish to frame your picture without a Passepartout, the sheet size also corresponds to the size of the picture, photo, poster, or art print to be placed in the picture frame.

The sheet size is the decisive dimension among the various picture frame dimensions for selecting and ordering a suitable picture frame.
In our shop, frame sizes are always specified by the sheet size (= Passepartout size / glass size). Please note that the frame itself will be larger than the ordered dimension, depending on the selected profile.

Example:
You have a picture measuring 20 x 30 cm. The picture is to be framed with a Passepartout with an outer format of 30 x 40 cm and an inner cutout of 19 x 29 cm. In this case, 30 x 40 cm is the sheet size you can use to select a suitable frame. A frame of exactly this size is designed to accommodate a corresponding Passepartout in the 30 × 40 cm format. Therefore, the outer format of the object to be framed should be precisely measured before a frame is selected.

The Rebate Size – The crucial millimeter for secure framing

The rebate size is typically 1 to 2 mm larger than the sheet size, depending on the frame size. It describes the actual inner support surface of the frame and thus the available space for glass, Passepartout, picture, and back panel.

The allowance compared to the sheet size is automatically accounted for by the frame manufacturer. It serves as a necessary tolerance to ensure that the frame content can be easily inserted and that there is sufficient room for assembly.
Without this tolerance, the insertion area would exactly match the sheet size. Even minor dimensional deviations could then make insertion difficult, lead to tension in the frame, or, in the worst case, damage the frame content.

You do not need to consider the rebate size when ordering your frame. The necessary allowance is automatically planned by the frame manufacturer.

The outer dimension indicates the total size of the finished frame – including the frame profile all around. Depending on the profile width, the outer dimension can be significantly larger than the inner dimension. A frame with an inner dimension of 30 × 40 cm can have an outer dimension of, for example, 34 × 44 cm, depending on the profile.

The outer dimension is particularly relevant if you need to know how much space the finished framed artwork will occupy on your wall – or if you want to hang multiple frames next to each other and plan for even spacing.

The frame rebate determines the visible area

Picture frames have a so-called rebate. This is the inner area of the frame profile that rests on the glass and securely holds the frame content in the frame from the front. The width of this overlap at the inner edge of the frame is not standardized and can vary depending on the selected profile molding. It is usually about 3 to 5 mm per side. Keep in mind that this overlapping part of the frame profile covers a small part of the frame content at the outer edge. This circumstance should be taken into account especially with very narrow Passepartout margins, as the visible Passepartout margin will be reduced accordingly.

The actual visible dimension of the frame content is slightly smaller due to the frame rebate. This visible inner dimension is referred to as the “visible area” or “clear dimension.”

The Outer Dimension of a Frame

The outer dimension of a picture frame is primarily important if you want to know how much space the finished framing will occupy on the wall or in the intended display area. However, this dimension is usually not specified separately in product descriptions, as it is rarely relevant for selecting the appropriate frame. If needed, the outer dimension can easily be derived from the profile dimensions.

The outer dimension describes the total size of the finished picture frame and is largely determined by the chosen frame profile. The wider the profile molding, the larger the outer dimension of the frame will be.

To calculate the outer dimension, the frame’s rebate size is supplemented by the visible width of the profile molding on both sides. It should be noted that a part of the frame profile overlaps the frame content at the front. This so-called rebate, which securely holds the glass, picture, and Passepartout in the frame, must still be subtracted from both sides in your calculation.

The Filling Height of Picture Frames – an important dimension for every framing

The filling height of a picture frame describes the available space within the frame for glass, Passepartout, picture, and back panel. It indicates how thick the entire frame content can be so that the frame can still be closed without problems. When selecting a picture frame, the filling height is of great importance and often even decisive for whether a picture frame is suitable for the planned framing. While, for example, a standard framing with a photo and Passepartout of standard thickness requires little space, the required filling height can quickly increase with more elaborate framings.

Special attention should be paid to the filling height when thicker Passepartout boards are used or a multi-layered Passepartout is planned. Each additional layer increases the total thickness of the frame content. In addition, other materials such as spacers or mounted pictures may take up additional space.

If the filling height is not considered during planning, it can happen that the frame content ultimately does not fit completely into the frame. This is often only noticed when inserting the materials – by then, the picture, Passepartout, and back panel are already prepared, but the selected frame proves to be too shallow. Such unpleasant surprises can be avoided by calculating the required total thickness of the framing in advance and comparing it with the specified filling height of the frame.

The filling height is therefore an essential quality and selection criterion for picture frames. Those who consider it during planning ensure that all components of the framing fit optimally and that the finished work can be presented professionally and securely.

Conclusion

For selecting the appropriate picture frame, two dimensions are particularly crucial: the sheet size and the filling height. The sheet size determines the permissible size of your Passepartout or other frame content, thus forming the basis of every frame order. The filling height, on the other hand, indicates whether all components of the planned framing, from glass to Passepartout to the back panel, will have sufficient space within the frame.
Especially when using thicker Passepartout boards or multi-layered Passepartouts, the frame’s filling height should be carefully checked.

Dimensions such as rebate size, visible area, or outer dimension are helpful for better understanding the construction and effect of a picture frame, but they are either automatically accounted for by the manufacturer or are only relevant in specific cases. By correctly determining the sheet size and considering the required filling height, you establish the most important prerequisites for a precisely fitting and professional framing.
